Switching power supplies
These power supplies are very efficient and are ideal for supplying large loads such as motors, stepper motors, servo motors, pumps, etc. They save space and are equipped with fans. Many types can be overloaded for a short time so that power peaks can also be supplied.
All power supplies are overvoltage protected, short-circuit proof and the output voltage can be adjusted with a small potentiometer.
The manufacturer Meanwell is the world's largest power supply manufacturer and is known for its quality and functional reliability.
A switching power supply, also known as a switched-mode power supply (SMPS), is an electronic power converter that changes the voltage level of an alternating current (AC) input to a different level of direct current (DC) output. The basic function of a switching power supply is to convert the input AC power into DC power with regulated voltage and current. This is accomplished by using a power switch that rapidly switches on and off at a high frequency, which generates a series of pulses. The pulses are then filtered and transformed to produce a smooth DC output voltage. Switching power supplies are widely used due to their high efficiency, compact size, and low cost compared to linear power supplies. They can be found in a wide range of applications, including computers, consumer electronics, and industrial equipment.
Switching power supplies (Switching Mode Power Supplies, SMPS) are modern power supplies that use high-frequency switching technology instead of directly relying on low-frequency transformers. This approach allows them to be compact, energy-efficient, and powerful, making them suitable for a wide range of applications. Here are the key technical characteristics of switching power supplies:
-
High Efficiency: Switching power supplies often achieve an efficiency of over 85% and can reach up to 95%. They convert energy more efficiently than linear power supplies, reducing energy losses through minimal heat generation. This is especially advantageous for mobile and industrial applications where energy savings are crucial.
-
Compact Design: Because switching power supplies operate at high frequencies (often between 20 kHz and 1 MHz), they can use smaller transformers and filtering components. This compact design makes them ideal for applications with limited space, such as computers, mobile devices, and other electronic equipment.
-
Wide Input Voltage Range: Many switching power supplies are designed for a broad input voltage range, often between 85V and 265V (AC). This versatility allows them to be used globally, even in regions with varying mains voltages, making them suitable for industrial applications that require stability despite voltage fluctuations.
-
High Stability and Precision: Switching power supplies provide precise, stable output voltage. Thanks to integrated voltage regulation techniques (such as Pulse Width Modulation, PWM), they quickly respond to load changes and voltage fluctuations, making them suitable for sensitive electronic devices.
-
Protective Features: Modern switching power supplies come with various protective features, including:
- Overcurrent Protection (OCP): Prevents damage from excessive current draw.
- Overvoltage Protection (OVP): Protects against voltage spikes.
- Short-Circuit Protection (SCP): Shuts down the power supply in the event of a short circuit.
- Overtemperature Protection (OTP): Prevents damage from overheating.
-
Lightweight: By using smaller transformers and less copper wire, switching power supplies are lightweight and portable. This is particularly beneficial for mobile applications, portable electronics, or industrial settings where ease of transport is important.
-
Low Heat Generation: Due to their high efficiency, switching power supplies generate less heat. Lower heat output reduces the need for extensive cooling and prolongs the lifespan of components.
-
Adjustable Output Voltage: Many switching power supplies offer adjustable output. Some models allow multiple voltages to be supplied simultaneously, which is especially useful for applications with multiple loads.
-
Low Ripple: Thanks to fast switching frequencies, ripple in switching power supplies is minimized and efficiently eliminated with filters. This results in smooth DC output, ideal for precision applications such as measurement technology or sensitive electronics.
-
EMI Filtering: Since switching power supplies use high frequencies, they are prone to electromagnetic interference (EMI). Integrated filters and suppression components help to reduce electromagnetic emissions, enabling their use in EMI-sensitive environments.
In summary, switching power supplies are characterized by their high efficiency, compactness, flexibility, and extensive protective features, making them the preferred choice for modern electronic devices and industrial applications.

Advantages of Rocketronics
About Rocketronics
Rocketronics was founded in 1999 as a family business by Louis Schreyer. As an engineer for microelectronics, I design hardware and also develop the software for it. We manufacture our products in-house on our own machines, and this for over 20 years now - made in Germany. In addition to the development and production, the testing of the products is also carried out here. We also manufacture the prototype construction and the test fixtures ourselves. We use lathes and milling machines for this, but we also use our 3D printers a lot. The CNC milling machines we build ourselves produce many small parts, e.g. for the housings of our controllers. In addition to manufacturing controllers, we also trade in the necessary components. As a dealer we have a large stock of components for machine building and automation, which we offer in this store. Our suppliers are the original manufacturers, with us you buy tested branded goods.
We also consult you when it comes to choosing the right components. We have a lot of experience in building and operating CNC milling machines and lathes. We can help you if you have questions, be it about the control system, the choice of drives or in general about the construction of CNC milling machines and the conversion of lathes.
Our online store shows you all items available for immediate delivery, and allows you to shop securely with many payment methods and fast shipping. Data traffic is of course encrypted, payment is processed and secured by reputable service providers, and we offer a 30-day return policy.
